Puck Lakes

The Puck Lakes Trail is a 6 mile out and back in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. Spectacular high lake hiking!

Driving

– It’s a 900 minute drive from Ashland along Dead Indian Memorial Road or 90 minutes from Medford along Route 140.
From exit 14 on I-5 you would head west on Ashland Street and take the left turn just before the golf course on Dead Indian Memorial Road. That winds for 34 miles past Howard Prarie Lake, past Elk Creek, past Lake of the Woods and hits Route 140. Turn right on 140 towards Klamath Falls and in 6 miles you will turn left on West Side Road but look for the large green “Rocky Point” sign. After 4 miles you will pass a sign for Rocky Point. 3 miles past that, you will see a sign pointing left saying “Nannie Creek Trailhead.” You have 7 miles on this dirt road and pay attention because their are some side road that may be enticing but… main dirt road! Always the main dirt road! Finally you will dead end into the well signed Nannie Creek Trailhead.

From exit 33 on I-5 go East on Crater Lake Drive for 13 miles until you intersect with Route 140. Turn right to take that east towards Klamath Falls. You are on this for about 44 miles – albeit mostly straighter, faster miles so it’s about the same as 34 windy Dead Indian Memorial miles. Then, same as above, you will turn left at the “Rocky Point” sign. 7 miles on pavement above the lake. Turn left at Nannie Creek Trailhead sign. Dirt road. Parking lot

Parking

– You dead end into this 30 spot lot. Park politely. Some park for multiple days.

Hiking

– From the parking lot head uphill on your left. The first mile is uphill with a number of switchbacks. The next 2 miles are wonderful, flatter, and cross country. Keep an eye out to your right for the cairns marking your right turn and if you are paying attention, you can actually see a glimpse of the lake through the trees. 100 yard to your right off of the main trail is the first of Puck Lakes. Walk around that first lake and you’ll hit the second lake.

Picnic, relax, explore, and then head on back to your car. First rate, top drawer, A-one 6 mile trail right there!
