Pluto’s Cave

Pluto’s Cave is 1 mile deep if you are a hard core caver. If you just like to kick around?… a great variety of smells and bats and holes and old graffiti to make this worth the drive even if you only use your cell phone flashlight.

Driving

– 90 minutes from Medford. Take I-5 south to California exit 766 (better known as the Liquor Barn Exit). Turn left on the 99/97 cutoff. Drive for 20 miles and there will be a dirt road to the right with an old, tiny “Pluto’s Cave” sign. Watch the video. Seriously. It’s crazy easy to miss. This dirt road is 1/4 mile.

Parking

– You dead end into a significant dirt lot with signage and an open parking scenario (AKA – try to be kind but there is no obvious way to park)

Hiking

– Follow the red arrows at the far end of the parking area. The larger, more obvious looking trail washes out and it’s harder to know when to get off that before you hit a private driveway. So you are following the red arrow trail, and yes, even that trail washes out a bit but trust yourself. Within a couple hundred yards you will see a pretty significant hole in the ground. Walk on down and begin your adventure!
